How To Make Sure Your Liver Is Healthy

28 Ekim 2025

2 dk okuma

Liver failure leads to disruption of all body functions. The danger is that many liver diseases are asymptomatic up to a certain point, and a person learns about the problem only when there is already an issue. Therefore, the liver must be checked regularly, even if you do not notice any alarm signals.

The biggest enemies

The liver is an effective filter that removes toxins from the body. All of our bad habits, eating habits, and consumption of alcohol and fatty foods are reflected in the liver. The liver has an excellent ability to recover and cope with junk for a long period — but at some point, it fails, like a vacuum cleaner with filters clogged by debris.

First signals

Even though there may be no obvious symptoms of liver problems, there are indirect signs that you should look out for:

Periodical bitterness in the mouth
Discomfort under the right rib
Yellowish tint of the whites of the eyes, face, and palms
Urine color becomes darker, and the feces, on the contrary, become lighter
The appearance of bruises on the body, with no explanation
Itchy skin at night
Acne
Increased fatigue
Decreased level of attention, difficulty concentrating

Annual check-up

Ideally, even a healthy person should have a liver check-up once a year, without waiting for the first symptoms to appear. It is especially important to regularly check the condition of the liver for people who are overweight or who regularly consume alcohol and fatty foods.

The basic check-up includes a biochemical blood test from a vein, which checks the level of bilirubin (direct and total) and 4 liver enzymes (AST, ALT, SHT, GGT). This will allow the doctor to assess the effect of toxic substances on your body.

It is very important to take tests in combination since the doctor will look at the change in each indicator in combination with others. For example, high levels of GGT and ALP may indicate cholestasis, but if only GGT is elevated, then it may be an issue related to long-term alcohol intake. For a complete clinical picture, the results of an ultrasound of the liver will also be needed.

Preparing for diagnosis

Blood biochemistry is given on an empty stomach — the liver is involved in the digestion process, and food can distort the results. For three days, it is necessary to exclude alcohol, since even a small amount of it will affect the state of the liver and make the result unreliable. It is also worth pausing the intake of vitamins, reducing physical activity, and refraining from smoking before the analysis.

If you undergo such basic diagnostics once a year, you can avoid liver problems in the long term and prevent the onset of liver disease by taking timely measures, at the very least by adjusting your lifestyle and nutrition.
