What Are We Really Breathing in Big Cities?

3 dk okuma

Why is it harder to breathe in a big city than in the countryside? The reason lies in a cocktail of millions of invisible particles and gases released into the air from car exhaust, industrial facilities, and heating systems. Let’s break down what urban air is actually made of!

What do we breathe in every day?

Particulate Matter PM2.5 — microscopic particles of dust, soot, smoke, or liquid droplets that form when dirty fuels are burned. Their diameter is about 2.5 microns — roughly 30 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair. They penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, increasing the risk of cancer, stroke, and heart and lung diseases.

World Health Organization (WHO) data shows that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ranks 4th among the leading causes of death worldwide.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) — a group of gases released by car engines during fuel combustion and by industrial activity. They tend to interact with sulfur oxides and water, creating smog and acid rain. Nitrogen dioxide can damage the heart and lungs, and at high concentrations it reduces visibility in the atmosphere.

Ground-level ozone — a greenhouse gas formed when pollutants from vehicles and industrial processes react with sunlight. It contributes to smog and damages plant growth. It worsens bronchitis and emphysema, causes asthma, and damages lung tissue. Each year, ground-level ozone exposure leads to about 472,000 deaths.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) — a gas produced when fossil fuels, especially coal, are burned at power plants and during industrial processes. It can react with water, causing acid rain. Sulfur dioxide irritates the respiratory tract, causing coughing, throat irritation, bronchitis, and even choking. Symptoms are especially severe in people with chronic respiratory diseases (like asthma) or cardiovascular conditions.

Carbon monoxide (CO) — a colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete fuel combustion, often called the “silent killer.” It can be found in homes as well as in urban air. Dangerous concentrations are around 7–10%. High exposure disrupts the central nervous system and harms the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

According to IQAir 2025 data, the world’s five most polluted cities are Delhi (India), Lahore (Pakistan), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kinshasa (Congo), and Karachi (Pakistan).

How can you protect yourself?

Try walking early in the morning or late in the evening when traffic intensity is lower. Avoid rush hours.
Choose walking routes away from busy roads. Air pollution levels drop by 50% just 500 feet (150 meters) from a main road.
Use a respirator mask with N95/FFP2 or N99/FFP3 certification. Regular surgical masks are not effective against fine PM2.5 particles. The mask should fit snugly to the face.
When driving in traffic, switch your car’s ventilation system to recirculation mode to avoid pulling in polluted air from outside.
Install airtight windows — this helps block polluted outdoor air, especially during rush hours or windy weather.
Ventilate your home only when outdoor pollution levels are lower — at night, early in the morning, or after rain.
Use air purifiers indoors. Choose models with both a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter (to trap gases and odors).
Clean surfaces with a damp cloth regularly to remove dust and particles.
Polluted air causes oxidative stress in the body, so add antioxidant-rich foods to your diet: berries, leafy greens (spinach, kale), nuts, turmeric, ginger, green tea.
Drink enough water to help your body flush out toxins.
Quit smoking — combined with polluted city air, smoking multiplies risks for the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
If you enjoy outdoor workouts, choose locations far from roads and factories. Heavy breathing during exercise makes harmful particles penetrate deeper into the lungs.

Don’t walk with children near heavy traffic! Babies in strollers are at the same level as car exhaust pipes.

Panic Breathing: What is Hyperventilation Syndrome?

With sudden breathing, every heartbeat sounds like a thunderclap, and sweating becomes more intense. Many people mistake these symptoms for a heart attack. If this is a regular occurrence, it is most likely hyperventilation syndrome. In most cases, hyperventilation (rapid and shallow breathing) goes hand in hand with anxiety or panic disorder. It occurs more often in women than in men. This condition does not threaten your life, but it significantly affects the quality of life.
