HRT - The Second Youth
Before menopause, a woman's libido peaks just before and after ovulation. But with the cessation of menstruation, these periods of the cycle disappear.
Due to the decrease in estrogen in a woman's body, physiological changes occur: reproductive function is suppressed, the cardiovascular system and the structure of bones and cartilage deteriorate, and thermoregulation is disrupted. The lack of estrogen has a negative effect on appearance, which can be frightening for women.
The male hormone testosterone is found in women in lower levels. These levels drop even further during menopause, which also contributes to the loss of libido. Testosterone is active at every stage of sexual response, starting with the onset of desire.
Solution: Modern medicine has an answer to these issues in hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Numerous studies confirm that HRT helps maintain sexual desire and prolong youth. Combined estrogen and testosterone preparations can significantly improve a woman's condition during menopause and postmenopause.
HRT is prescribed by a gynecologist after a thorough examination of the patient, as the therapy has certain contraindications, and it is very important for the doctor to weigh the benefits and risks.
Dryness
Another reason for decreased desire is a decrease in lubrication. When estrogen levels drop significantly, blood flow to the vagina decreases, it becomes drier, and the tissues of the mucous membrane and barrier layers of the skin thin, so sexual intercourse can become painful and uncomfortable.
Solution: There are many over-the-counter water- or silicone-based lubricants that can reduce discomfort. In addition, your doctor may recommend vaginal moisturizing creams, suppositories, or a low-dose vaginal estrogen ring. Regular sex promotes blood flow and reduces dryness, so it is important not to give it up.
Low self-esteem
As women enter menopause, they begin to notice obvious changes in their appearance and may no longer feel attractive or desirable. As a result, they convince themselves that their sex life is over and begin to avoid relationships.
Solution: In this case, a comprehensive approach is needed, including HRT and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Combating the signs of aging increases a woman's everyday confidence, self-esteem and motivation, while reducing mood swings. Cognitive behavioral therapy will help restore inner harmony and accept the inevitable changes in appearance. During sessions with a psychotherapist, you will be able to see the positive sides of life and get rid of destructive negative thinking.
Healthy lifestyle to the rescue
Excess weight, low physical activity, and health problems directly affect libido. A decrease in libido can be triggered by urinary incontinence, underactive thyroid, back and joint pain, rapid heartbeat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.
Solution: You should take care of your health at any age, but it is especially important at this stage. By noticing the appearance of certain problems in time, you can significantly slow down their development and stay in great shape for a long time. Exercise normalizes the functioning of all organs and systems of the body, which has a beneficial effect on a woman's appearance and mood. The approach to fitness should be individual, but the more active a woman is during this period, the easier it is for the body to adapt.
Physical activity helps keep blood vessels elastic and prevents varicose veins, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and thrombophlebitis.
During menopause, your diet should be varied, balanced, and include protein, complex carbs, and fats. You should avoid fast carbs, but if you're craving something sweet, go ahead and treat yourself to some dark chocolate. Add more fruits and veggies to your menu and remember to drink enough water—ideally 0.5 oz. for every 1 lb. of body weight.
Women going through menopause should do activities such as Pilates, yoga, stretching, cardio training, swimming, and walking. Dancing has a wonderful effect, as it lifts your mood and helps you relax.
Good news
Many women say that they felt a surge of desire after menopause. And many women feel like they have become truly free. At that age they often no longer have to look after children, work herself to exhaustion, or worry about unplanned pregnancies. Women become more relaxed in expressing their emotions, ready to experiment, and unafraid to try something new—and that's exactly what you need for great sex.
